Romances of epic proportions which changed the way people Loved

I have been watching quite a few movies of late. Being a "no word to describe" kind of Mohanlal fan, i remember growing up watching his movies.
Repeatedly watching these movies now, it awakens a sense of love i should've had. Love of purity and depth.

A close friend of mine was taking a big step in his life. All dreams of a lifetime converging to this one girl found by family and he accepted to make her his own for the rest of his life.
We have shared our common interests in writing, thinking, travelling, trying new cuisine and love for old movies. We never agreed on a lot of things but always had our opinions we strongly believed in.

He was allowed his courting period and we used to talk to eachother about this girl and i would give him tips on what the girl would expect and what not to talk about.

He introduced me to two epic romances of malayalam cinema  from padmarajan movies which made me lose sleep!
Jayakrishnan - Clara from thuvanathumbikal.
Love stories we all wished we had and the ones we never had. The chillness as rain falls from heaven everytime jayakrishnan picturises clara. The madness of relationships. The clash of his pure impulsive love for a rebellious girl who initially declines his love plea to accidentally being the reason for another girl's downfall. Prioritising according to morals and little voices of your mind. A love story which defined love for me . The significance of rain and stubborness of the characters, Jayakrishnan's sincerity to love, Clara's mystery and Radha his first love's jealousy and her being needy for love.

And so is Solomon and Sophia in nammukku paarkaan munthiri thoppukal. A romance which smells of wine. A movie which made me jealous of Sophia how lucky  she was to be proposed by Solomon by quoting verses from the bible
"Salomonte song of songs-il parayunna pole" it rings in my head. The same feeling when someone squeezes your shoulders tight before hugging you close to his chest.
"Namukku graamangalil chennu raparkaam,

Athiravilae ezhunettu munthirithottangalil poyi munthiri valli thalirthupoovidukeyum mathalanaarakam pookukayum cheytho ennu nokkam

Avide vechu  njan ninakkente premam tharum" a dialogue which can make me laugh and cry at the same time.

I could go on and on endlessly how these movies make me think about the turbulance of our emotions, external factors and intensity.

The only difference between a story then and now would be that now we choose a relationship according to the practicality and logic and back then it used to weave logic around the deep love.

  1. Eeerie coincidence; I was planning a post on Mohanlal-Padmarajan combination movies and I see this post here :)

1986 was a landmark year for Lalettan - sigh I wish to see Lalettan in such intense roles; all destroyed by the larger than life superstar image that 'Narasimham' bestowed on him.

last line should start 'The only...'

  3. Minu, Thoovanathumbikal is a film which has a smell of realism to the ground. It simply enchanted my heart seeing rain be portrayed as a character. It is deeply intriguing and grows on you every time you watch it. No moral judgements are drawn on any of the characters ,at the same time, relationships which are hard to explain have been portrayed with strong romantic overtones. The relationships raised numerous questions in my mind, something which i could never fully answer myself , but have always startled and fascinated me and continues to do so.

Namukku paarkaan munthiri thoopukal is a film remembered by all as the having depicted the best proposing scene by the protogonist.

These two classics still after many years, continue to be discussed ,talked about and feature in the favourite movies ever list of mine.

Mohanlal as Namukku Parkkan's Solomon and Thoovanathumbikal's Jayakrishnan remain evergreen.

Thanks Minu for igniting passionate memories of Padmarajan.
